European Commission publishes report on GDPR
Just over two years after the General Data Protection Regulation (hereinafter “GDPR”) came into force, the European Commission published on 24 June 2020 an evaluation report. According to the Commission, the GDPR would have achieved most of its objectives, in particular due to enforceable rules and a new European governance and enforcement system created by the GDPR.
At the same time, the GDPR would had proved to be flexible in unforeseen situations such as the COVID-19 crisis. The report further concludes that data protection harmonisation continues to increase in the Member States of the European Unions. In addition, companies would increasingly develop a compliance culture and they would even increasingly use strong data protection as a competitive advantage. The report also lists measures that are intended to facilitate the application of the GDPR especially for SMEs.
