Gabe Shawn Varges has extensive Swiss and international experience as a compliance, governance and regulatory executive, advisor, and thought-leader. He is Senior Partner at the international governance, compliance, and compensation firm, HCM, in Zurich and Geneva.
He was one of the first global chief compliance officers in Switzerland, becoming responsible group-wide for compliance and corporate responsibility at Zurich Financial Services in 1999. Earlier, Mr. Varges had served, among other things, as attorney in the international law firm of Shearman & Sterling, working both in New York and overseas.
Prior to his current position, Mr. Varges headed the corporate governance area at FINMA. He has played a key role in promoting, domestically and internationally, preventive principle-based approaches, such as through the strengthening of boards of directors, well-calibrated compensation systems, and compliance and risk management functions.
Mr. Varges is Lecturer at the University of St. Gallen Executive School, where he is Director of Compliance Studies and focuses on the leadership, governance and managerial aspects of compliance functions. His latest publications include “The Case for Board Budgets” and three updated chapters in the forthcoming 2016 edition of the book, Corporate Compliance Guide: the Next Generation, C. Basri, Editor.
Mr. Varges is co-chairing the ECS Working Group Leadership together with Roman Mazzotta.
